Hoffman's Valley is a superb trail for experienced and fit
mountain bikers. Actual trail is 26 km long, but cycling from your base in Piet
Retief, you will make 85 km circle.
First downhill section is fast with only
occasional hazards which you can spot at some distance to give you time and slow
down. There is a choice of a couple of routes going down and they all come
together before crossing the Easter Creek.
Following 2 km is a pleasant ride
along the river and then uphill on left bank of another creek. Soon the trail
starts fading, but aim for the Saddle and from there get to the trail you see
going up the mountain.
Second downhill section drops through dramatic
landscape littered with boulders. It is very rocky terrain and that's the joy of
it because it's a case of planning and then placing your front wheel exactly.
Any speeding here will end with a crash.
After slippery river crossing the
trail enters dense and encroaching vegetation and shortly starts rising steeply.
End of the trail is near the top of one of the highest mountains in the area.
